Starting in 1975, John gained fame as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live. Alongside Dan Aykroyd, he developed iconic characters "Joliet" Jake Blues and Elwood Blues, which led to the creation of their blues and soul band, The Blues Brothers.
The duo first appeared as musical guests on SNL in April 1978. They eventually expanded their act by adding a full band and went on to open for Steve Martin during his residency at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles in September 1978.
